Independent support

This service supports families that have a child or young person aged 4-25 years with special educational needs or disabilities as they go through the process of a statutory assessment to develop an Education, Health Care Plan (EHCP) or to convert an existing Statement of Special Educational needs to a new EHCP.

The role of the Independent Support Worker is to:

  • Work with parents or the young person throughout the EHC assessment and planning process.
  • Help parents and young people contribute their views and make choices or give preferences.
  • Make everyone aware of the local offer and where to find it.
  • Provide information on personal budgets

Parents and young people can access this service by calling a free phone number which is operated by a trained Independent Support Worker, who will give initial information and support. If more intensive longer-term support is needed, they will then co-ordinate support for individuals through the locally based IS workers employed at each of the 3 partners within the consortium around the county.
